This directorate deals with the supervised hand ling of solid waste material from generation at the source through the recovery processes to disposal.
1) Department of Solid Waste Generation for Environmental Sustainability
This department brings out how extraction of raw materials, manufacture of products, consumption, and waste management all generate wastes. The generation of solid waste is the inevitable consequence of all processes where materials are used.
2) Department of Solid Waste Separation for Environmental Sustainability
This department focuses on the process of identifying, classifying, dividing and sorting of garbage and waste products in an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle materials.
In order to segregate waste appropriately, it is important to correctly identify the type waste that is generated. For the purposes of waste segregation at source, waste is identified and classified depending on their biological, physical and chemical properties.
3) Department of Solid Waste Storage for Environmental Sustainability
This department deals with the interim containment of solid waste, in an approved manner, after generating and prior to collection and disposal.
4) Department of Solid Waste Collection for Environmental Sustainability
This department focuses on the transfer of solid waste from the point of use and disposal to the point of treatment or landfill.
5) Department of Solid Waste Transport for Environmental Sustainability
This department deals with the conveying of solid waste from one place to another by means of vehicle, rail, car, water vessel, conveyor, or other means
6) Department of Solid Waste Treatment for Environmental Sustainability
This department concerns itself with any method, technique or process which is designed to change the physical, chemical or biological character or composition of Solid Waste, including incineration.
7) Department of Solid Waste Processing for Environmental Sustainability
This department concentrates on operations that change the chemical, physical, or biological properties of solid waste to make it easier to dispose of, recover a resource, or transfer solid waste material, excluding the transportation of solid waste.
8) Department of Solid Waste Recycling for Environmental Sustainability
This department deals with solid waste recycling which refers to the reuse of manufactured goods from which resources such as steel, copper, or plastics can be recovered and reused. This means any action or process of converting waste into reusable material or any recovery operation by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials or substances whether for the original or other purposes.
9) Department of Solid Waste Recovery for Environmental Sustainability
This department deals with the conversion of non-recyclable waste materials into usable heat, electricity, or fuel through a variety of processes, including combustion, gasification, pyrolization, anaerobic digestion and landfill gas recovery.
10) Department of Solid Waste Disposal for Environmental Sustainability
This department focuses on the discharge, deposit, injection, dumping or placing of any solid waste into or on any land or water.
